With generous funding from the State DOE, we developed and piloted a 3-module series of workshops to support preservice teachers in learning about climate change over the 2023-24 academic year.
The first workshop, which we enacted during the Clinical I course, provided an overview of the standards themselves.
The second workshop is a 2-hour Coursera course on the effects of climate change in New Jersey. This includes documentation of course completion.
This google slides presentation template includes all the tools you need for module 1 and information you’ll need to share regarding module 2. You should create an attendance sheet that your preservice teachers can use to record their attendance.
The third workshop, which we enacted during the Clinical II course, allows preservice teachers an opportunity to identify where it makes the most sense for them to plan climate change lessons in their student teaching placement classroom. It also shares some curricular resources that can be used as starting points. This google slides presentation template includes references to a survey.
After preservice teachers have completed all three modules, you should use the survey (referenced above) to create certificates of completion. The survey should include a place to document attendance for Module 1 (you may want to cross-reference with your attendance sheet), a place to upload certificates from the AMNH coursera course, and a place to upload lesson plans. You may also want to ask preservice teachers to reflect on their lessons.
